Each chapter of life is challenging and valuable. Experiencing social changes from capitalism to communism in Vietnam, I immigrated to a democratic society in Canada 35 years ago. These years have matured me with knowledge to adventure through life with wisdom.
I am a visual artist creating a variety of artwork including caricatures, quick sketches of urban scenes, portraits, superheroes, paintings and pumpkin carvings. My main focus is doing caricatures for special events and teaching art programs.
In addition, I am on the Workshop Committee of the Calgary Sketch Club, an active member of Bedstone Olymic Toastmasters and the Northeast Seniors Supportive Group. Striving for opportunities, I participate in various activities, exhibitions and events such as a court sketch artist for CTV, art instructor for different schools, organizations and painting events.
In 2013, I was a guest on the City TV Breakfast Show to show my pumpkin carving. I have also showcased my pumpkin carvings at the Telus Spark Centre. I have painted portraits for Grade 6 graduates for the last four years.
My most ambitious accomplishment was drawing 147 Grade 9 graduates for two years. These devotions have granted me the Roland Gissing Trophy in 2009 by the Calgary Sketch Club for outstanding contribution to community.
In April 2016, I was awarded the same trophy for teaching L3 Services and coordinating the Ageless Potential Art Show for seniors and elementary students at the Judith Umbach library.
This year, I was one of the finalists for the 21st Immigrants of the Distinction Awards for Arts and Culture.
Art is within my soul. By participating, I gain valuable experience and confidence that one cannot achieve in an academic program. Helping others to gain confidence, self esteem, and enjoyment in art is my goal.
